New York to London FAQs
Eastbound (JFK→LHR) takes 6h 45m–7h 15m thanks to the jetstream tailwind. This is ~45 minutes faster than the westbound leg. Most flights depart JFK/EWR in the evening and land London between 06:00 and 10:00 the following morning — the classic transatlantic red-eye.
JFK has more airline choice (BA, Virgin, Delta, AA, JetBlue, Norse) and better onward subway access via AirTrain + E/A train. Newark is United's transatlantic hub — the best option if you're connecting from across the US, and NJ Transit gets you to Penn Station in 20 minutes ($15). For fare-hunting, Newark wins about 60% of the time.
US passport holders can visit the UK visa-free for up to 6 months (tourism, business, study up to 30 days). From January 2025 an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) is required — apply online at gov.uk/eta, cost £10, valid 2 years with multiple entries. Your airline cannot board you without it.
The polar jetstream blows west-to-east across the North Atlantic at 100–200 mph, usually concentrated at 30,000–40,000 ft — right where transatlantic aircraft cruise. Eastbound flights ride this tailwind, landing 45–60 minutes earlier than the westbound leg. In exceptionally strong jet-stream conditions, flights have completed JFK→LHR in under 5 hours (BA once did it in 4h 56m on a 747).
January, February and early November are cheapest — return economy from £279. Avoid June–August (summer peak, £800+ returns), Thanksgiving week (late November — peak outbound for US travellers), and 15 December – 5 January (Christmas/NYE) when fares often exceed £875 return.
Yes — all seven carriers offer premium cabins. BA Club World, Virgin Upper Class, Delta One, AA Flagship, United Polaris, JetBlue Mint. Prices from $1,500 return in January to $6,000+ in peak summer. JetBlue Mint is the best value; Virgin Upper is the most stylish; BA First and AA Flagship First are the only true first-class products on the route (from $6,500 return).
