Why student flights?

What you get over a standard public fare

💷

10–25% off public fares

Airlines and student-travel specialists (StudentUniverse, STA before it folded, Student Flights) hold private fare inventories at reduced prices. Savings are biggest on long-haul (£100–400 off LHR→JFK, LHR→Australia) where full-service carriers have student allocations.

🎒

Extra baggage

Year-abroad fares commonly include an extra 10–15kg checked allowance or a second free bag — essential when you're moving your life for a semester. Virgin, BA and Air France have specific "student" or "long-stay" baggage upgrades.

🔄

Free or cheap changes

Student fares typically allow one free date change and open-jaw bookings (fly into one city, out of another) at no extra cost. Perfect for semester dates shifting or summer travel plans that take shape gradually.

Eligibility, documentation and how to actually get the discount

Student flight FAQs

Do I need an ISIC card to book a student fare?
Usually yes, or equivalent documentation (enrolment letter on university headed paper plus photo ID). ISIC is the most widely accepted and costs £15 from isic.org. Some airlines accept only ISIC; others accept a NUS card or .ac.uk email verification. Check before booking if you're unsure.
How much do student fares actually save?
Long-haul savings are biggest: £100–400 off routes like LHR→Sydney, LHR→JFK, LHR→Delhi versus the public cheapest. Short-haul European savings are small (£5–20) because low-cost carriers already sell cheap. Student-specific baggage allowances and free-change rules often add more real value than the headline discount.
What's the age limit for youth fares?
The Youth fare category is typically 12–25 years old and does not require student enrolment — just ID proving age. The IYTC card (International Youth Travel Card, £15) is the standard proof. Some airlines go up to 30 for youth fares in specific markets.
Can I fly out to one city and back from another?
Yes — "open-jaw" bookings are commonly allowed and often at no extra cost on student fares. Ideal for year-abroad: fly into Sydney in September, travel through Southeast Asia over summer, fly home from Bangkok. Use our multi-city search to price open-jaw itineraries.
Do student fares allow date changes?
Most include one free date change, with a small re-issue fee (£30–60) for further changes. Read fare rules carefully — some of the cheapest student promotions are non-refundable and non-changeable, matching standard basic economy rules.
Is student travel insurance different?
Yes. Standard single-trip insurance caps stays at 31 days and often excludes study-related cover (lab equipment, course fees, work placements). Student policies from Endsleigh, StudentGuard and Explorer cover semester or year-long trips, sports, shared accommodation contents and part-time work. Much better value for anything over 6 weeks abroad.
