Why business class?

What you actually get for the money

🛏

Lie-flat sleep

On any long-haul over 7 hours, a 180° flat bed is the difference between arriving fresh and arriving wrecked. Qatar Qsuite, BA Club Suite, Emirates and Virgin Upper Class all offer direct-aisle access — no climbing over a sleeping stranger.

Lounge & priority

Fast-track security, priority boarding, 2-3 bags free at 32kg each, and pre-flight access to hubs like BA Concorde Room, Qantas First Lounge LHR or Virgin Clubhouse — showers, à la carte dining, treatment rooms.

🚗

Chauffeur & extras

Emirates, Etihad and Qatar include a chauffeur-drive to and from UK airports on most business fares (within ~75 miles of LHR/MAN/BHX). BA offers First Wing check-in at LHR T5; Virgin's LHR Clubhouse has a private wing security lane.

Business class FAQs

How much does business class cost from the UK?
Europe short-haul "business" (recliner seat, middle seat blocked) runs £300–700 return. Long-haul starts around £1,200 return to the US east coast, £1,800–2,500 to Asia and the Gulf, £3,500–5,000 to Australia or South America. Sales regularly discount by 30–40% for departures 3–6 months out.
Which airline has the best business class to Asia?
Qatar Qsuite (with privacy door and "quad" seats that combine into a 4-person suite) and Singapore Airlines' new 2024 business class are consistently rated highest. Cathay Pacific, ANA and JAL also score well. BA Club Suite is competitive on direct routes.
Is business class ever "worth it" for a 7-hour flight?
Depends on the timing. Overnight London→New York eastbound gets you 5–6 hours of proper sleep in a flat bed — you arrive functional. A daytime 7-hour flight is harder to justify at 3–5× economy prices. Premium economy is usually the better value for awake daytime flights.
Can I upgrade to business class with Avios or miles?
Yes. BA's "Upgrade Using Avios" lets you pay cash for economy then upgrade with Avios — usually best value. Virgin Flying Club, Emirates Skywards and Qatar Privilege Club all offer mileage upgrades, though availability is limited and peak dates book out. Cash-plus-points upgrades at check-in are rarely good value.
Do I get a separate security lane?
At most major UK airports, yes. Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester and Edinburgh all have Fast Track available to business-class passengers (sometimes included, sometimes at £6–8 extra). BA's First Wing at LHR T5 and Virgin's Clubhouse entrance at T3 bypass the main queues entirely.
What's the difference between business and first class?
First class offers private suites (often with sliding doors), 30–38" wide beds, caviar service, separate First lounge access, chauffeur included, and usually pyjamas + full-service turndown. First typically costs 2–3× business. On many airlines, top-tier business (Qatar Qsuite, BA Club Suite) rivals older first-class products in comfort.
