Premium Economy Flights
from the UK

The sweet spot between economy and business. Expect 6–8 inches more legroom, 2–3 inches wider seat, better meal, real cutlery, priority boarding, 2 checked bags and a separate smaller cabin. Fares typically 1.5–2.5× economy — the best value on long-haul daytime flights.

Why premium economy?

When the upgrade actually makes the flight

📏

38" seat pitch

Standard economy is 31" pitch. Premium gives you 38–40" — enough to uncross your legs, work with a laptop properly, and actually reach the overhead bin without leaving your seat. Seat width grows from 17" to 19–20".

🍽

Real meal, proper cutlery

Multi-course dining on china, welcome drink on boarding, premium wine selection. Virgin Premium, BA World Traveller Plus and Air France Premium Economy menus are genuinely good — closer to old-style business than current cattle-class reheat.

🎒

Priority boarding & bags

Usually Group 2 boarding, 2 checked bags at 23kg each (versus 1 × 23kg in economy), priority security at some hubs, amenity kit, larger personal screen (13–18"), power socket + USB at seat.

Premium economy FAQs

Is premium economy worth paying double economy?
For flights over 6 hours, usually yes. The extra legroom alone is worth it if you're over 6ft or want to work with a laptop. For daytime awake long-haul (LHR→JFK, LHR→Bangkok), premium economy is the sweet spot — arrive functional without paying business-class money. On short-haul under 4 hours, skip it.
Which airline has the best premium economy from the UK?
Virgin Atlantic Premium (formerly Premium Economy) is consistently rated best on UK→US routes — fresh cabin, strong meal, welcome glass of bubbly. Air France and Lufthansa run close behind. BA World Traveller Plus is fine but slightly dated on older aircraft. Singapore Airlines Premium Economy wins on Asia routes.
Does premium economy have lie-flat seats?
No — premium economy is a recliner seat, typically with 7–9 inches of recline and a leg rest. For lie-flat you need business class. Some airlines (Air France La Premiere) have angled shell seats that recline further but don't go flat.
Can I use the business class lounge?
Not typically. Premium economy tickets give priority boarding and priority check-in but not lounge access at departure. Exceptions: if you hold airline elite status (BA Silver, Virgin Gold) you keep your lounge rights. Some airlines (EVA Air, Qantas) offer lounge access to premium economy passengers at select hubs.
How do I upgrade from economy to premium at the airport?
Most airlines offer paid upgrades via the online check-in process (typically 30 hours before departure) or at the airport. Prices vary wildly — £200–500 each way is typical on long-haul. BA's "Upgrade Using Avios" lets you use points for the upgrade instead. Never a guarantee — depends on seat availability.
Which aircraft types have premium economy?
Most long-haul widebodies on UK routes do: Boeing 787, 777, 747 retired from most fleets; Airbus A350, A380, A330. Some older A340s and 777-200s don't have premium cabins. Check the airline's seat map (or SeatGuru) before booking — cabin layout matters for premium legroom and noise.
