Flex-date tips that actually work

Date-shift rules of thumb from years of booking data

Tuesday and Wednesday departures are often cheaper than Friday/Sunday on European short-haul. For long-haul the cheapest departure day is usually Tuesday eastbound and Wednesday westbound.
Red-eye flights (depart 22:00–05:00) are often cheaper than peak-time departures (08:00–10:00, 17:00–20:00). Add the cost of an Uber at 02:00 and it may still be worth it.
Avoid school-holiday weeks unless you have to travel in them — UK half-term fares to Mediterranean destinations are typically much higher than in the surrounding weeks.
Booking Tuesday afternoon GMT used to be the cheapest day to buy, but that rule is dead. Fares now reprice continuously throughout the day based on demand algorithms. Set a price alert instead.
Shoulder seasons (April–May, September–October) are golden: warm weather, lower demand and cheaper than peak. Best value weeks of the year for European beach holidays.
