Why book one-way?

When a single-fare ticket makes more sense than a return

Open-jaw trips

Fly into one city and out of another. Pair a one-way London→Barcelona with a one-way Madrid→London to skip the backtrack. Often cheaper than a closed-loop return on the same dates.

📅

No fixed return date

Digital nomads, sabbaticals, long trips, job moves — if you don't know when (or if) you're coming back, buying a return you'll never use is wasted money. Book the outbound now, decide the return later.

Onward connections

Booking separate legs via a hub (London→Singapore, Singapore→Sydney a week later) often beats the through-fare, especially when mixing full-service and low-cost carriers.

One-way flight FAQs

Are one-way flights more expensive than returns?
On full-service carriers, yes — a one-way often costs 70–90% of a return fare. On low-cost airlines like Ryanair and easyJet, each leg is priced independently, so one-way and return fares effectively match. Always compare both options on a metasearch before booking.
Will I have problems at immigration without a return ticket?
Some countries (US, Philippines, Costa Rica) and some airline check-in agents ask for "proof of onward travel" — evidence you'll leave before your visa expires. A confirmed onward flight, train, bus or refundable booking all satisfy this. Schengen countries rarely enforce it for UK passport holders, but it's policy-dependent.
Can I book a one-way in business class with Avios or airline miles?
Yes — most loyalty programmes (BA Executive Club, Virgin Flying Club, Emirates Skywards) let you redeem one-way awards. It's actually the most efficient use of miles because you only pay half the cash "fuel surcharge" versus a return.
Is it cheaper to book two one-ways than a return?
Sometimes. Low-cost carriers show no difference. But on BA, Virgin and other legacy carriers, two separately-booked one-ways can cost 30–50% more than a round-trip fare because round-trip prices are deeply discounted. The exception: mixing two different carriers (outbound with one, return with another) frequently beats any single through-fare.
What happens if my one-way flight is cancelled?
UK passengers are protected by UK261 (and EU261 for EU-origin flights): you're entitled to a refund or re-route on the airline's cost, plus compensation of £220–£520 if the cancellation is within 14 days and the airline's fault. One-way bookings don't lose these rights.
Can I change a one-way ticket later?
Depends on the fare class. Most basic economy fares on low-cost airlines are non-changeable or charge a £30–60 change fee. Flexible and business-class fares usually allow free date changes. Always read the fare rules before booking if flexibility matters.
