Virgin Atlantic

Richard Branson's 1984 disruption of BA is now the UK's number-two long-haul airline — famous for Upper Class suites, the Clubhouse at Heathrow and a distinctly un-British sense of fun.

About the airline

About Virgin Atlantic

Virgin Atlantic was founded in 1984 by Sir Richard Branson, originally as a rival to British Airways on the London–Newark route with a single leased Boeing 747. The airline has always positioned itself as the premium, personality-led alternative to BA — famous red and white livery, flamboyant cabin crew uniforms (Vivienne Westwood designed recent iterations), and Branson's public duels with his IAG rival.

Ownership and alliance position have shifted significantly in recent years. Delta Air Lines took a 49% stake in 2013 and remains the majority external shareholder; the Virgin Group retains 51%. In 2023 Virgin Atlantic formally joined the SkyTeam alliance, bringing its customers into the Delta / Air France / KLM / Korean Air network and opening up reciprocal lounge access and Flying Club benefits across 17+ carriers.

Virgin Atlantic focuses almost exclusively on long-haul. Its route network covers the US (New York JFK, Boston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Miami, Atlanta, Seattle, Washington, Orlando), Canada (Toronto), Caribbean (Antigua, Barbados, Jamaica, St Lucia), Middle East (Tel Aviv, Dubai, Istanbul), India (Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore), South Africa (Johannesburg), and Far East (Shanghai, Hong Kong). A small short-haul operation — Virgin Atlantic Connect — acts as a UK regional feeder to Heathrow.

Check-in

Online check-in opens 24 hours before departure (48 hours for Flying Club Gold members) and closes 75 minutes before long-haul departure. Upper Class passengers at Heathrow have a dedicated private Drive-Through Check-In — arrive by car at the T3 forecourt, hand over your bags, and walk straight into the terminal.

  • Online / app: 24 hours ahead — boarding pass to Wallet.
  • Upper Class Drive-Through (T3): A Virgin Atlantic signature — book via My Booking.
  • Clubhouse Check-In: Premium and Upper Class have dedicated desks inside the Clubhouse lounge.
  • Bag drop: Closes 60 minutes before long-haul.

Fleet

Virgin Atlantic operates around 45 long-haul widebodies — one of the smaller long-haul fleets in Europe but with unusual variety. Current: 17 × Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners (the workhorse of the medium-demand long-haul), 12 × Airbus A350-1000 (the newest aircraft, with latest Upper Class Suite and "The Loft" social space), and a handful of Airbus A330-300s and A330-900neos. Virgin retired its Boeing 747-400 "Queens" fleet in 2020 during the pandemic restructuring. No narrowbody operation — short-haul UK regional service is codeshared with Loganair and operated under the Virgin Atlantic Connect brand.

On-time performance

Virgin Atlantic's long-haul OTP (arrivals within 15 minutes) typically runs at 78–82% — broadly in line with BA long-haul. As a small fleet, Virgin is vulnerable to single-aircraft technical delays cascading across consecutive flights. Heathrow slot pressure and ATC weather reroutes also drag the number down; the airline publishes monthly OTP on its investor materials.

Passenger reviews

Typical strengths: Upper Class suite on A350 is genuinely one of the best business products flying today; Clubhouse at Heathrow T3 is widely considered the best business-class lounge in London; cabin crew personality is distinctly warmer than BA; newer aircraft with A350/787 cabins throughout; Flying Club Avios-equivalent programme with strong Virgin Money and Amex UK partnerships.

Typical criticisms: Economy Light pricing is often more than BA Basic for the same route; fleet size means limited frequency on less-popular routes; SkyTeam move has shifted loyalty focus and some Flying Club members feel the earn rates have weakened; limited UK regional access without a Heathrow connection.

Aggregate score across Trustpilot, Skytrax and AirlineRatings: 8.2 / 10.

Virgin Atlantic FAQs

Which Heathrow terminal does Virgin Atlantic use?+

Virgin Atlantic uses Terminal 3 at Heathrow. This is also where Delta, partner SkyTeam carriers, and Oneworld non-BA airlines depart, so connections to/from Delta USA services are terminal-internal. T3 is also home to the flagship Clubhouse lounge for Upper Class passengers.

What alliance is Virgin Atlantic in?+

Virgin Atlantic joined SkyTeam in March 2023. This aligns it with Delta Air Lines, Air France, KLM, Korean Air, Aeromexico, China Airlines and others. Flying Club members earn and redeem miles across the alliance, and status holders get reciprocal lounge access.

Is Virgin Atlantic Upper Class worth the money?+

If you value the cabin experience, yes — the A350 Upper Class Suite has a sliding door, fully flat bed and access to the Clubhouse lounge at Heathrow T3 which includes a full à la carte restaurant, spa treatments and a hair salon. It's generally priced in line with BA Club World but often rated higher on in-flight service. Avios-equivalent reward redemption is also good value on Upper Class.

Does Virgin Atlantic still fly to Australia?+

No. Virgin Atlantic's last Australia service (Hong Kong–Sydney) was retired in 2014. You can get to Australia via codeshare partners but no Virgin metal-operated service. The UK–Australia market is served primarily by Qantas, Singapore Airlines, Emirates, Qatar and British Airways.

Can I use Flying Club miles on Delta or Air France?+

Yes — since Virgin Atlantic joined SkyTeam in 2023, Flying Club miles can be redeemed on SkyTeam partners including Delta, Air France, KLM and Korean Air. Redemption rates and availability vary; sweet spots include Delta One to Johannesburg and Air France business to Cape Town.

Does Virgin Atlantic fly from Manchester?+

Yes — Manchester is Virgin's second-biggest UK hub. Services include New York JFK, Orlando, Atlanta, Las Vegas (seasonal) and Caribbean leisure routes (Antigua, Barbados, Jamaica). Operated from Manchester Terminal 2.
