Neon Tokyo, zen Kyoto temples, bullet trains, conveyor-belt sushi, snow-dusted Mount Fuji and some of the world's best value thanks to a weak yen. Japan is the bucket-list trip that actually delivers.
Japan's UK visitor numbers have doubled in the past five years — weak yen, direct flights, and a reputation for reliability and cleanliness have turned it from niche bucket-list into mainstream 2-week holiday. Around 400,000 Brits visit annually.
The classic "Golden Route" is Tokyo–Hakone/Mount Fuji–Kyoto–Osaka, easily done by bullet train (Shinkansen) in 10 days. Tokyo alone has enough to fill two weeks — Shibuya crossing, Tsukiji market, Asakusa temples, Akihabara electronics, Harajuku fashion. Kyoto is the cultural counterpoint with 1,600 temples, geisha districts and perfect gardens.
Japan is not the expensive trip it was 20 years ago. A bowl of world-class ramen is £6. A mid-range hotel in Tokyo is £80. The 7-day bullet train JR Pass is £280 and covers unlimited Shinkansen rides. Budget £120-£180/day for a comfortable trip.
Only Heathrow flies direct to Japan. Manchester lost its direct Tokyo route — all other routes are 1-stop.

| Language | Japanese. English is limited outside tourist zones — download Google Translate's camera mode before you go. |

Late March to early April for cherry blossom (sakura) — book 6+ months ahead, prices are highest. October and November for autumn leaves (koyo) — equally beautiful, less crowded. Avoid Golden Week (29 April–5 May) when the whole country travels. Summer (July–August) is hot and humid with typhoons; winter (Dec–Feb) is cold but great for skiing in Hokkaido.
Cherry blossom or autumn leaves. Book way ahead.
Mild, fewer tourists. May is post-Golden-Week.
Hot, humid, typhoon season. Golden Week chaos late Apr.
No. UK passport holders can enter Japan visa-free for up to 90 days for tourism. Your passport just needs to be valid on arrival (no 6-month rule).
Yes, but Japanese data roaming is expensive on most UK networks. Buy a Japan eSIM before you travel — Ubigi, Airalo and Holafly all have 5GB/10GB Japan packages for £15–30 that activate on arrival. 5G coverage is excellent in cities. EE and Vodafone international roaming is usable short-term but can hit £40/day in outside Europe.
Late March to early April for cherry blossom, or October–November for autumn colours. Both are peak and need to be booked early. Avoid Golden Week (29 April–5 May) when Japan travels en masse.
11 hours 45 minutes direct with BA, JAL, ANA or Virgin from Heathrow. Via Helsinki with Finnair is the fastest 1-stop option from other UK airports (total 13–14 hours).
Only Heathrow. BA, JAL, ANA and Virgin Atlantic all fly LHR to Tokyo Haneda daily. Manchester lost its direct Tokyo service — travellers from other UK airports connect via Amsterdam (KLM), Helsinki (Finnair), Dubai (Emirates) or Doha (Qatar).
Japan is one of the safest countries on Earth — lost wallets routinely get handed in to police. The main challenges are language (English limited outside tourist spots) and cultural mistakes (don't tip, don't eat walking down the street, take shoes off at ryokans and temples).
