About Singapore

Why UK travellers love Singapore

Singapore is the easiest long-haul destination in Asia for UK travellers. English is the main working language, the currency is stable, crime is almost non-existent, the public transport is world-class, and flights from Heathrow are direct at 13 hours.

For a 3–5 day trip: Marina Bay Sands, Gardens by the Bay (the Supertree Grove lit up at night), Singapore Flyer, a hawker centre dinner (Lau Pa Sat or Maxwell), a night safari, Sentosa Island, and Little India / Chinatown for cultural pockets. The city is compact — you can cover the highlights in long weekends.

Prices are London-ish — food courts (hawker centres) give you amazing £3–5 meals, but hotels and drinks match London. As a stopover on longer Asia/Oceania trips, Singapore is hard to beat: Changi Airport alone is worth a few hours.

Flights to Singapore — FAQs

Do I need a visa to visit Singapore from the UK?

No. UK passport holders get up to 90 days visa-free on arrival. Passport must be valid for at least 6 months.

What currency does Singapore use?

The Singapore Dollar (SGD, S$). 1 GBP ≈ 1.70 SGD. Cards are accepted everywhere including MRT stations (tap to pay) and taxis. Hawker centres sometimes still prefer cash — bring some small notes.

When is the best time to visit Singapore?

February to April and July are slightly drier. But Singapore is hot and humid year-round (26–32°C), so timing mainly affects how often you get caught in afternoon rain. Most attractions (malls, museums, Gardens by the Bay domes) are indoor or covered.

How long is the flight from London to Singapore?

13 hours direct with Singapore Airlines or BA from Heathrow. Manchester to Singapore is 13h direct with Singapore Airlines (4 weekly). Via Dubai or Doha adds 4–6 hours.

Is Singapore worth it as just a stopover?

Yes — Changi Airport alone is world-class (Jewel's rain vortex, free city tours for long layovers). If you can spare 2–3 nights, Singapore works brilliantly as a stopover on routes to Australia, Bali or Thailand. Most airlines allow a free stopover when booking.

Is Singapore safe for UK travellers?

Exceptionally safe — often ranked #1 safest country in the world. Violent crime is practically nonexistent. The main concern is Singapore's strict laws: fines for littering, chewing gum, eating on the MRT, and jaywalking. Drug possession has severe penalties (including death for trafficking).
