Glasgow Airport (GLA)
Glasgow Airport (GLA) is Scotland's busiest airport and one of the UK's main regional hubs, handling around 9 million passengers per year. Located in Paisley, Renfrewshire, just 8 miles west of Glasgow city centre, it is served by the frequent Airport Express bus and is easy to reach from across the west of Scotland.
easyJet is the largest carrier, alongside Ryanair, TUI, Jet2 and British Airways. Long-haul routes include United Airlines seasonal services to Newark (New York) and Emirates seasonal flights to Dubai — a significant offering for a non-London airport. Turkish Airlines provides connections to Istanbul and beyond.
The airport operates from a single terminal. Following investment in recent years, the terminal is well appointed with a good range of shops, restaurants and bars both landside and airside. Multiple lounges are available for pre-booking. Glasgow Airport is the natural hub for west Scotland, Argyll, Ayrshire, and the Highlands, with better transatlantic connectivity than Edinburgh.

Glasgow Airport FAQs
Choose the one closer to you. GLA is better for Glasgow, the west of Scotland, Ayrshire and Argyll. EDI is better for Edinburgh, the Lothians and Fife. On routes, Glasgow has slightly better transatlantic options (United to Newark) and strong leisure routes. Edinburgh has more airlines overall and is better for European business destinations. Both are well-run airports — geography should decide.
The Airport Express bus runs every 10 minutes to Buchanan Bus Station (city centre) in around 20 minutes for £9.50 single. A taxi costs approximately £25–30 and takes 20–35 minutes. There is no direct train link.
Emirates has operated seasonal direct flights from GLA to Dubai (DXB). Services run typically in summer; check Emirates.com for current schedule. When available, this is Scotland's best direct long-haul connection to the Middle East and onward to Asia/Australia.
Yes — United operates seasonal direct flights from GLA to Newark Liberty (EWR) in New York, typically running from May to October. This is currently the only direct transatlantic service from Glasgow and is very popular with Scottish travellers heading to the US.
No direct train link exists. The Airport Express bus (every 10 min, £9.50) to Buchanan Bus Station is the main public transport option. The nearest train station is Paisley Canal, about 1.5 miles from the airport. A long-proposed rail link has not yet been built.
Options include Short Stay (walkway distance), Premium (covered, close to terminal), Long Stay (free shuttle, best value) and Meet & Greet. Pre-book online to save up to 50% on walk-up prices. JetPark off-airport is also available.
Glasgow Airport (GLA) has far more routes and airlines; Prestwick (PIK) is mainly Ryanair. Prestwick's advantage is a direct train to Glasgow Central (45 min). GLA wins on choice; Prestwick wins if your Ryanair route is there and you want the train link.
Yes. All major car hire companies operate from the arrivals hall including Hertz, Avis, Enterprise, Europcar and Budget. Pre-booking online is substantially cheaper than walk-up rates — especially in peak summer when demand for Scottish Highlands road trips is high.
